Mathematics is learned most effectively when it becomes a hands-on experience. This is exactly where the “Mathe.Einfach.Machen” project comes in: Mathematics workshops are being set up at four secondary schools, inviting students to independently discover, explore, and apply mathematical concepts in practical ways.
Fostering a Love of Math
A math workshop is a specially equipped learning space where hands-on materials, experimental stations, and practical tasks complement classroom instruction. The goal is to teach basic mathematical skills in accordance with curriculum guidelines in a clear and hands-on manner, and to foster a love of mathematics.
Since March 2026, each of the four participating schools has been developing its own math workshop with a specific thematic focus. The subject areas include probability, trigonometry and algebraic expressions, geometry, and financial mathematics. Various types of schools are participating—Realschule, Gymnasium, integrated comprehensive school, and Oberschule. This results in a diverse range of materials and learning stations tailored to the respective school requirements.
A Growing Range of Innovative Learning Materials for Mathematics Instruction
A central component of the project is the close collaboration among the schools. At regular network meetings, the developed materials are presented, tested collaboratively, and further refined. In this way, all participants benefit from mutual exchange and jointly create a growing range of innovative learning materials for math instruction.
The initiative for the project arose from the idea of extending a concept that had already been successfully tested to other schools. The mathematics workshop at the Georg-Christoph-Lichtenberg Comprehensive School in Göttingen-Geismar served as a model; its experiences and conceptual foundations made the development of the new workshops possible.
